hodgson's characteristically colorful caption makes out thirst to be the meaning of the radiation in the lines of the face, and the stylized petals and spokes of wavering heat. that hadn't occurred to me, but it makes sense.

what i first thought of was one of those tattoo-faced warrior guys from the south pacific, with that traditional display of hanging the tongue over the chin to indicate crazy fighting ability or something. but that doesn't explain this disembodied face's vacant stare, like thirst does.
