I was just re-reading this story and realized how really strange it is. Here, the realm of the dead is, in a sense, an amplification of the realm of the living--and less bearable because of it. The ending, with the orb and the voice, is not perfectly conclusive but interestingly suggestive of the nature of the netherworld(s) that the narrator has survived.
