this poem is effective in a horror context without being overtly scary. it draws most of its visual energy from the reader's imagination.

when i read this poem i don't put myself there in the attic, because my presence would ruin the mood. i'd be stirring dust in the beams of light, or hearing myself breathe or something. see, my idea of this poem is that the scene isn't being witnessed by anyone. maybe these shadows are excited out of nothingness only when nobody is there to deny them.
