Sometimes, the best titles for stories are short and simple. Horror fiction writer Bentley Little generally goes with the word "The" and one other word. In this case, the other word for me was "Carving."
Halloween and carving. The Carving. Yeah. Conjure up a mind image or two?
That simple, two word title resulted in a flood of mind images for me, and away I went. Writing happens that way, sometimes.
While I cannot say the story is entirely unique (what ones are, nowadays?), I can say that the ending has a creepy, "Ramsey Campbellish " feel that I love to pass on to horror lovers.
So with that in mind, I tip my hat to famous writers Dean Koontz (whose tale "The Black Pumpkin" no doubt had some subconscious influence on this bit), Stephen King, David Morrell, and of course, Ramsey Campbell. Those gents leave you with that "oh, wow, queasy feeling in your gut" when they get it right. Thanks a million for the memories, guys.
It is my sincere hope that I leave you with a bit of that nasty feeling, myself.

I haven't been around for as long as some of the other cats, but please trust in me when I say: You have succeeded, Ron. In every way.
