Dear Mike,
After I read the 14 pages, I got a feeling that maybe be some of your inspiration were from Stephen King's---" Carrie ", " The Raft ", " The body ", " The moving fingers " It's no offense, as there's really no new things under the sun.... One thing new to my reading experience is the descripting of the last breath blow upto the surface of the water in the pool; it's nasty; and I wonder if it just author's imagination.
Not too bad a short story, hope Playboy/Esquire/New Yorker would buy it.
Regards

Thanks Charlie,
There wasn't anything about soul transferral in those Stephen King stories you mentioned, though "The Raft" was an obvious influence. You forgot to mention Douglas Clegg's "I Am Infinite, I Contain Multitudes" and Robert R. McCammon's "The Deep End" and Harlan Ellison's "Mephisto in Onyx," all of which played a part in this story ending up the way it did.
Oh yeah, and Playboy/Esquire/New Yorker would never touch this story.
Thanks again, Charlie.

I've never read any of the stories to which you two have talked about as being an influence. Whoever came out with what first does not matter much to me, I thought it was a fabulous story, very imaginative and intense. Obviously FantasticHorror saw this as well and decided to publish it instead of "Playboy"(Playboy contains short horror stories? hmm), Esquire, or The NewYorker. It doesn't really matter where you find the story I guess, I'm just happy I was able to have the pleasure of reading it. Loved the icky parts XP Keep writing! Can't wait to read some of your other work.
