feedback from the workshop:
"this may be the most vivid poem we've had from you."

and the author remarked:
"Like 'Beat the Devil' I get very involved when I am writing about Catholicism, the existence (or non existence) of God, or just religion in general."

John, I liked this poem a lot.

"while frightened corpses
hear the Death rattle in pocket change
on the bottom of donation baskets"

The aural element to this poem is vivid. Visual imagery is not always hard to pull off, but to make a reader hear the poem is hard to pull off with any degree of success. Very well done!

.

Thank you Anita.

You know as a writer yourself the fear, that what we hear or see in our heads will never be perfectly captured in words. To have you hear what I heard makes this one of my favourite poems.

This is the greatest compliment you could have given me and I feel that maybe I have this one poem right.

I once wrote in the forum that: "Poetry, in my opinion, is like... well, it's like an act of daring. It's about the writer being brave enough to open himself / herself up to not only the reader, but to feelings and emotions we might not always be aware of. Or want to even feel... And really great poetry (again, in my opinion) can remind us why we not only dare to dream, but why we chase our stars in the first place. No matter what it may be that we search for: love, career, happiness or desire... even being able to weave our own stories and tales told. No matter what it is, poetry can also make us see ourselves in a way we wish not to.

Regardless, poetry has to affect us..."

John's work has always given me that. His work isn't simply words upon a page -- it is the emotions of heart and of horror. Each poem has life. Each one reminds the reader how words, no matter how brief, can truly affect us.
