bobby mullinix is a young student of creative writing whose instructor labeled his work 'literary fiction' to his dismay. i don't know the specific inspiration for this story, but it's something to be seen when traveling across the country. many places just sort of fall by the wayside, and you look at them through the window of a vehicle and wonder why anyone would bother living there.
the fantastic element of this story is the notion of the 'center of time.' i am reminded of a visual aide i once saw illustrating a fall through a shaft drilled from one side of the earth to the other, through the center of gravity. it showed that you will fall for a while and then pass the center, but then slow down and reverse direction, over and over until you finally come to rest in the centermost space of the shaft from which there is nowhere to fall.
well done bobby! i hope you try another submission after this.
