this story makes armageddon look like a case of snap-cap trauma. it makes deep impact look like a bug on a windshield. it makes wrecking balls look like girly little fluttering snowflakes. in fact, don't even read itit might blow the backs of your eye sockets out.
(but even that would be wussy compared to this story)

This one is oddly poetic and appealing--no characters, no sharply defined episodes to speak of, just one steady fatal movement. I like it.

due to an html error, ron's comment on this story was misdirected to another thread:This short tale is a beacon to writers everywhere. No, we don't have to have a ton of words and a long tale to invent a sense of atmosphere almost as dense as the derelect ship was in this wonderful short piece.
Mood was masterfully carved - - not a happy place, but a fascinating one that wrung - - dare I say it? - - a tear for the hoary old ship and its crew, plus a spare one or two for dear old Earth.
Well done!

Thanks!
This is a tale of unintended consequences-partly inspired by the legends of U-Boats endlessly circling in the Gulf Stream, and also by an old sci-fi story where an astronaut gets a brief glimpse of a dead spaceship.
There's a also a "Farscape" episode mixed in here. Perhaps a bit of the great Lensman books, too, and of course, the Aliens saga.
I've always thought that humanity's first indication of other intelligent life will be ruins, or a wrecked ship somewhere.
Time, and Space are very, very deep.
