what do you suppose it means that the gravedigger is himself one of the dead?
i picked this one from a collection of kubin illustrations for its theme of community, of taking things out of the ground and putting things in. in this traditional season of harvest, the barrier between the living and the dead wears thin in our minds. even in the crueler climate of winter we seem not to dwell so much on morbid matters.
it's probably true that anticipation of death is a much worse deal than death itself.
