Three things:
1. You have to admire a thrifty parasite.
2. The closing lines maintain about as well as anything I've read the idea of cosmic inconsequence--or as I think HPL called it, Indifferentism. A term that has yet to catch on popularly.
3. The poem also reminds me, strangely enough, of an old SF novel I recently read, The Cometeers, by Jack Williamson. Although the parasite and prey were both substantially larger in that case. And for those who might be interested, Cometeers also provides a fair foreshadowing of that more well-known space opera, Star Wars. There's talk of a Force and a weapon not dissimilar in description to the ray/laser of the Death Star.
